Under 13A Primary Schools Football Final

Under 13A Primary Schools Football Final

Scoil Lorcáin   1-2      St. Declan’s   1-8

Scoil Lorcáin travelled to Cleaboy last Thursday to take on St. Declan’s in the Under 13 Football Final.  Taking part in the ‘A’ division for the first time in many years the Scoil Lorcáin boys did themselves proud. Having beaten Scoil Lorcáin in the league St. Declans went into the game as favourites.  Playing with the wind, St. Declan’s were soon on top and went 2 points up in the first few minutes.  Scoil Lorcáin were forced to defend for long periods and at the end of the half time score line shood at Scoil Lorcáin 0-0, St. Declan’s 0-4.

Scoil Lorcáin started the second half in determined fashion and were rewarded with their first score – a point by Austin Gleeson.  Following a great block by Colin Cassidy the ball broke to Damien Nam and he shot to the net to leave the sides level.  Scoil Lorcáin continued to dominate and it was no surprise when Mark O’Keeffe shot over to put Scoil Lorcáin in the lead for the first time.  Then came the turning point of the game. From a Scoil Lorcáin free,  Darragh Flynn found Austin Gleeson with a fantastic pass.  Austin rounded his marker and hit a tremendous shot which was heading for the top corner, only for the St. Declan’s  goalkeeper to bring off a super save.  St. Declan’s then broke up the field and scored the equalising point.  Following a poor kickout St. Declan’s got the all important winning goal to run out winners and retain the title.

This was a tremendous effort from the boys of Scoil Lorcáin who were physically much smaller than their opponents but  never gave up.

Congratulations to all the Under 13 Panel
